Quidi Vidi Gut
On Sunday, we took a walk through Quidi Vidi Gut to let Geoff test a new wide angle lens he purchased for his film camera. Some of the shots I took that day:

No new photos this week
Due to the terrible weather we've had this week, we haven't taken many pictures. To fill in the gap until we get shooting again, I thought I'd post a few pictures that didn't quite make the flickr cut. All three are photos that I really like, but all have nit picky problems - mostly caused by photographer error.
This one was a picture I took with Geoff's telephoto lens on a trip to Signal Hill. I like all the blues in it and that if you look closely you can see an iceberg under the fog. But, if you look closely, you can also see two strange dark vertical lines running the length of the picture. I have no idea why they are there - the lines didn't show up in any other of the photos from that day:

This was another photo from the same trip to Signal hill. I really like the idea of this photo - especially the blurred out background shot of the city and the nice rust on the shackle. But, the depth of field is much too shallow in the picture:

Finally, this is a shot that I took of Annie while she was eyeing Geoff's fish tank. I love the way she looks in this picture! Unfortunately, the depth of field is much to shallow in this photo as well (only one of her eyes are in focus). This time the limited DOF was an attempt to compensate for the fairly dim lighting situation, which didn't quite work out:

Canon EOS rebel 35mm
Yesterday, Geoff and I attended an early morning yard sale with the intention of purchasing a film camera. For $20, I was able to pick up a 35mm Canon EOS Rebel, which was in great shape but lacking a battery. Lucky for me, the Source had the necessary battery on clearance for $3, so I was able to spend the afternoon testing it out. It was a beautiful day, so we took another Sunday drive - this time to Flat Rock and Middle Cove Beach. The camera worked exactly as expected - definitely $23 well spent!
Fort Amherst
Yesterday after work, Geoff and I took a trip to Fort Amherst. I decided to take the opportunity to cross a goal off my list. I borrowed Geoff's wide angle lens and used the resultant pictures to compile a HDR image:
The image ended up way too over-processed, but is interesting nonetheless. It's definitely a technique I'll play with again in the future. In the meantime, I took a number of other shots that I liked while we were playing around in the ruins:

setting goals...
I have a terrible memory. Consequently, I love lists! So, here is a list of techniques that I intend to try over the next few weeks:
- high-key portraits
- more slow shutter speed photos (with subjects other than water)
- HDR
- Panoramas
Topsail Beach
We took a drive to Topsail Beach last night so that I could test my new tripod. Geoff was kind enough to let me borrow his neutral density filter, so I got to play with some slow shutter speeds:
After many failed attempts, this young fellow finally sat still for an 8 second exposure:

Stiles Cove
On Saturday morning we took a trip out to Stiles cove with the Drizzle Boys. Apparently their group is very aptly named! Still, we had a great time in spite of the less-than-perfect weather. These are two of the shots that I took that day:
Rhododendron
A photo of the Rhododendron tree outside the NRC-IOT that I shot a few weeks ago. Just in time too - by the following week, the tree was no longer in full bloom.
